How the window closes
Timing varies with temperature, materials and how wet things got, but this is the general pattern.
- First hours
- Water is still moving into materials. Getting it out, by pumping, extraction or squeegee, limits how far it soaks in.
- First day
- Drywall wicks upward, insulation holds water against framing, and carpet pad is saturated. Removing these now makes the biggest difference.
- Day two to three
- On wet porous materials kept warm and damp, mold growth can begin within roughly this window. A musty smell is often the first sign.
- First week
- If wet materials were left in place, visible growth may appear along baseboards, behind furniture and on the back of drywall.
- Weeks later
- Hidden moisture in closed cavities or under flooring can still support growth if drying was cut short.

Why floodwater makes mold more likely
Mold spores are present nearly everywhere, indoors and out. They need moisture and something to feed on, and a flooded basement offers both in abundance: paper-faced drywall, wood framing, carpet backing, cardboard boxes, and the organic matter in silt. Summer floods in Castle Rock also arrive when basements are at their warmest, which helps growth along.
The dry Colorado climate works in your favor once water is out and the structure is opened up. But closed spaces, such as a wall cavity behind a cabinet or a slab under vinyl flooring, do not benefit from outdoor dryness. Those areas need direct attention.
If visible mold appears over a large area, or the home has occupants with asthma, allergies or weakened immune systems, treat it as a separate problem. The EPA's widely cited guidance suggests that areas larger than about ten square feet are better handled by people experienced in mold cleanup, following established remediation practices.
